Evergreen tree 5-10m high with white or grey branchlets. Pale- or yellowish-green, glossy, thick leaves with lateral veins very close together. White or yellowish-green flowers in much-branched, many-flowered clusters from October to April. Purplish-red, one-seeded berries that are oval to pear-shaped, 15-25mm long.
An evergreen shrub or small tree 3-6m high. Dark, almost black-green, thick, leathery, glossy leaves sometimes variegated in green and yellow. Heavily, scented white flowers appear in large terminal clusters from October to February followed by shiny black berries. The leaves and fruits are poisonous even though birds eat the fruits.
A tall, dense, massively branched, evergreen tree 25-58m high with smooth bark that is grey-blue in colour with orange-yellow blotches. Dark green leaves which are glossy above and distinctly paler beneath. Cream flowers appear from May to December. The fruit capsules are globular and brown. This tree invades forest clearings, fynbos, roadsides and water courses.
Spreading tree to 15m high with rough bark that doesn't have an appealing appearance. Light green leaves and whitish or yellow flowers appear from November to March. Straw-coloured, shiny, rattling pods with raised bumps.
A small tree or shrub growing up to 4m high with open leafy branches. Dark green, drooping leaves which are often grey-hairy. White or pale yellow flowers borne singly or in groups of two or three from July to March. The seed pods are flattened and turn brown and occur in distinctive clusters that are raised over the seeds. Although used as a fodder plant, it is poisonous to livestock in large quantities.
